CELLOGRAPHY
/I know that it is Monday again because I am inventing new words to use in my blog post. This week the word is “Cellography”, a tasty little portmanteau that blends the important bits from a cellphone and photography. Taking pictures with a cellphone is hardly something new - I have been doing it for ages. However, I should make it clear that the pictures I take with my iPhone are snapshots that I use to illustrate my blog posts and other written content, and to include as attachments in emails and text messages. This is not true for everyone.
I know several people who use the cellphone as their primary camera , or at least as a preferred back up to their DSLR. As the technology inside our phones becomes ever more sophisticated, there are fewer and fewer good reasons to ignore the high quality point-and-shoot that is in your pocket right now! But it is not that simple, is it? While cellphone technology has been moving ahead in leaps and bounds so too has camera technology. We will break down some of the misleading marketing gibberish and try to make sense of contradictions like this … “200 megapixel cellphone cameras that are outperformed by 24 MP mirrorless cameras”.
I have decided to split this discussion into two separate livestreams. In the first episode we will concentrate on modern cellphone hardware and the rapidly evolving software that makes it all run. We will compare cellphones and dedicated cameras to discover which formats are superior in a number of different categories. This is sure to ruffle some feathers! On Thursday, in Macro Talk Too, we will turn to the practical question of how to take good macro pictures using your cellphone. Here is your link to theThursday stream: https://youtube.com/live/Q5H3jk8LXv0?feature=share
Saturday morning at 10AM we will be joined by Larry Strunk for another episode of Tangent, our 3D modeling and printing workshop. You are encouraged to bring your projects, or even better, to drop them of ahead of time, over on my Discord Server (there is a new page for just this purpose!). Larry is planning a presentation on SolidWorks as a possible low cost alternative to the very expensive Fusion 360. If you wish to attend, the only thing you will need is this invitation : Allan Walls is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
