How We Learn

I hope everyone is doing well this week.

I had a challenging weekend, courtesy of my left sciatic nerve. If you have never tried to write original Livestream content without being able to sit, or stand, or lay down, then you have missed out on one of life’s truly memorable experiences. I am confident in the diagnosis but surprised by the severity of the symptoms and also by the almost complete immobility that results.

Both of this week’s livestreams examine how adults learn macro photography and also how we often use our deeply rooted biases to sabotage our learning. On Tuesday, our focus will be on the importance of intelligent and systematic self-critique. We will also look at several cognitive biases that may be responsible for our tendency towards overconfidence in our competence, especially during the early phases of learning a new skill. On Thursday we will compare the bias-informed learning of the newcomer to the systematic, unemotional approach of the more experienced and informed enthusiast. This is the practical core of the discussion and I will help you explore the way an experienced photographer “sees” an image. This is powerful information that will make you a much more effective teacher, mentor, speaker, and, of course, photographer.
